Exs inc is a design lab that develops Japan’s craftsmanship around Japan and the globe.
We started off by exhibiting at trade fairs and then organizing exhibitions to attract buyers.
Not only do we display the work of craftsmen, we have made sure that it leads to sales. Working with the craftsmen direct, we aim to widen the designs and develop the potential of craftsmanship in Japan.
Our current project is centered around alter fittings for temples and shines and artworks that have gold foil. The traditional techniques of hakuoshi is what we look to implement – meaning that our works are covered with gold foil. The second material we have implemented is an industrial leather.
To in-print the gold foil into leather, it’s not only the hakuoshi techniques but also the leather processing techniques that we researched. Throughout the development, the gold foil began to fade and it turned out looking like a picture in an old temple. In the short term, we are experimenting with silver foil – but our overall goal remains the same – to ensure we maintain craftsmanship for today’s needs.
